All the teams for Round 17 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Collingwood’s hopes of breaking a 10-match Smithy’s VFL losing streak have been bolstered by the inclusion of two AFL premiership players for their cellar-dwelling battle with arch-nemesis Carlton at Ikon Park on Sunday.

Mason Cox is set to return from a long-term knee injury and Billy Frampton has been dropped from the AFL team

The pair are named alongside returning cricket convert Wil Parker, although Dan McStay and Lachie Sullivan have gone up and Charlie Dean is in concussion protocols as the Magpies meet a Blues team that has found some of its best form of the season in the past couple of weeks.

The Magpies haven’t won since edging Carlton by a point at this venue back in Round 3, while the Blues snapped a nine-match drought a fortnight ago before pushing flag fancy Footscray all the way last week.

Collingwood has named a father-son debutant, with Nicky Christian, the son of 1990 premiership player Michael, to play his first VFL game.

Carlton has rung the changes, with George Hewett, Jesse Motlop, David Cuningham and Jack Carroll promoted to the AFL team, while Marc Pittonet and Brodie Kemp come back down and Billy Wilson returns from injury.

Geelong has boosted its team for its top-four showdown with Footscray at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday, with Tanner Bruhn to make his comeback from a broken hand through the early game and Jhye Clark being dropped from the AFL in favour of Mitch Knevitt.

Phoenix Foster will miss with injury, being replaced by Geelong Falcons debutant Liam Kershaw.

The Bulldogs lose Anthony Scott and Will Lewis to injury, but Harvey Gallagher drops back after a sustained run at AFL level.

Leek Aleer, Phoenix Gothard and Wade Derksen are back from injury but Xavier O’Halloran went up for the GWS Giants’ must-win clash with reigning premier Gold Coast at Blacktown, with the Suns losing the promoted Alex Sexton, while Will Rowlands starts a three-match suspension for rough conduct last week.

Noah Answerth returns for the Brisbane Lions alongside Logan Morris against Sydney at Brighton Homes Arena, with Henry Smith earning an AFL debut and Shadeau Brain also going back up.

The Swans get Nic Shipley back but lose in-form mids Corey Warner and Ben Edwards and mid-season draftee Tom Hanily.

Casey Demons will aim to extend winning runs against Frankston beyond 10 years (overall) and 18 years (at Kinetic Stadium) while dealing a hammer blow to the Dolphins’ finals hopes, with Matt Jefferson back in the team alongside ex-Dolphin Mitch Szybkowski and a debutant in St Bedes-Mentone forward Jack Behnk, who has kicked 19 goals in eight VAFA games this year.

The Dolphins have recalled Taj Campbell-Farrell to replace the injured Harrison Coe among two changes.

Paddy Dow and Ben Paton return to Sandringham’s team for its crucial game against Southport at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday, as does forward Vince Zagari, who has missed three months with a recurring ankle injury.

The Sharks made one change, with ruck/forward Riley Bowman coming in for Jacob Townsend, whose comeback game last week ended with him in concussion protocols by half-time.

Box Hill Hawks lose Ben Cavarra to a hamstring injury and Finn Maginness to the AFL but regain Harry Morrison, Jaylon Thorpe and livewire Jake Arundell, while teenage Blackburn forward Billy Hicks will debut after 15 goals in 13 Eastern games including a haul of seven against powerhouse Noble Park.

They play North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval, with the Roos naming Geordie Payne, Curtis Taylor, Kallan Dawson and Toby Pink to replace promoted trio Zac Fisher, Griffin Logue and AFL debutant Robert Hansen, plus ruckman Hamish Free, who has succumbed again to concussion.

Richmond has handed a debut to Victoria Metro’s Marsh AFL U18 National Championships winning captain Jagga Smith for its eight-point game against Williamstown at DSV Stadium.

The Tigers will be without Noah Cumberland, Thomson Dow and Kaleb Smith who are travelling to Adelaide and Chad Harris and Kane McAuliffe to injury, while the Seagulls regain Corey Ellison, Toby Triffett and Jack Browne but lose Blake Coleman.

Port Melbourne is chasing the 100th win over Coburg in its history at Piranha Park on Sunday, but will have to do it without Robbie McComb, Kye Turner and Spencer Johnson, but Anthony Anastasio, Harry Stubbings and Harry McGuire return and Albury key defender Lucas Conlan makes his debut.

But the Lions will be desperate to celebrate Vicki Cleary Day with a victory, and they have regained Kyle Weightman, Mitch Podhajski, Tom McKenzie and Charlie Beasley, while naming George Belcher for his first game of the year, replacing injured pair Donovan Toohey and Rhys Galvin.

Werribee is celebrating a second 100-game milestone in a row with Jack Henderson bringing up the ton in its top v bottom game against Northern Bullants at Avalon Airport Oval, and the Tigers have regained forwards Nick Hayes and Jay Dahlhaus from injury but lost captain Nick Coughlan to a hamstring tear.

The Bullants have recalled Josh Buchanan and Wal Wuol for youngsters Felix Dreher and Dane Whitnall.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally.
