STAR Geelong midfielder Joel Selwood has resisted overtures from Gold Coast to remain at Geelong.

The Cats confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Selwood would re-sign with the club, but did not disclose how long the deal would run.

“I can confirm that we have agreed to terms with Joel and his management, and that he will be staying at Geelong,” Geelong CEO Brian Cook said in a statement on geelongcats.com.au.

“We still have to finalise the paperwork but all parties have agreed to the deal.”

Selwood’s signing means the Cats can now focus on keeping fellow midfielder Gary Ablett who is also firmly in Gold Coast’s sights.

Selwood, 21, has starred since debuting for the Cats in 2007.

Drafted with pick No.7 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, the third of four Selwood brothers was a runaway winner in the 2007 NAB AFL Rising Star and was a key part of that year’s premiership team.

He also played in the 2009 flag and the 2008 grand final loss to Hawthorn.

Widely regarded as one of the league’s most promising young players, Selwood has played 77 games and polled 16 votes in last year’s Brownlow Medal to finish eighth overall.
