Over the past three years, the Sydney Swans have enjoyed the benefits of being involved with the AFL Sportsready Traineeship Programme.

A work-study initiative which allows young trainees the opportunity gain on the job experience whilst studying in a relevant area, the traineeship has quickly become part of the Club’s structure, and the trainees who have been involved in the programme have become valued staff members during their twelve month placements.

Most recently, the Sydney Swans have been fortunate to have trainee Jon Burt working in the Membership department whilst studying for his Certificate IV in Business Administration.

“It’s been a great experience. Having completed a traineeship like this puts you ahead of others in the marketplace, and working at a large organisation like the Sydney Swans looks really good for my future employment prospects,” said Burt, adding that he had really enjoyed working at the Club.

Swans Human Resources Manager Adam Bowen believes the traineeship system is beneficial to both the Club and the people it has employed, saying, “The AFL SportsReady program provides an opportunity that many people seek but few get to experience - the chance to work in the sporting industry in one of the predominant codes.”

He will shortly undertake a search for a new trainee, as Jon Burt’s placement with the Club draws to a close. When asked what the Sydney Swans seek in potential trainees, Bowen said, “A traineeship is generally an entry level position and we do not expect that the trainee has a set level of experience behind them. Obviously the normal attributes of knowledge, skills and ability relevant to the role remain important but we are strong on bringing people of good character to the Club, irrespective of the role.”
