MELBOURNE midfielder Jack Trengove says he's hopeful the lure of success will be enough to keep out-of-contract star Tom Scully at the club beyond this season.

Speculation over Scully's playing future heightened on Wednesday morning, following comments from Collingwood president and radio host Eddie McGuire suggesting the former No.1 draft pick had already signed with new club Greater Western Sydney.

Scully's management denied the reports, but confirmed contract talks involving the 19-year-old had been put off until the end of the season.

Scully and Trengove have forged a close bond since being drafted with picks No.1 and No.2 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, but Trengove said he hadn't discussed the GWS rumours with his teammate.

"It's hard for me to answer and I don't have any insight [on the matter]. It's something between the club, Sculls and his manager, but I'd love for him to stay," Trengove said in Adelaide on Thursday.

"You want the best players around to play with. He's a great bloke, a great player and someone that I'd love to play the rest of my career out at Melbourne with."

Three consecutive bottom-three finishes on the AFL ladder have allowed the Dees to stockpile impressive young talent, including Scully, Trengove, emerging forward Jack Watts, defender Jack Grimes, midfielders Cale Morton and Jordan Gysberts and untried duo Sam Blease and Luke Tapscott, over the past few years.

The Melbourne hierarchy believes it has the nucleus to become a team of the decade and Trengove said continued success was just around the corner for the rebuilding club.

"We've had a couple of good drafts over the last few years and have built up a pretty good list so far. It's all about developing those guys now into senior AFL players," he said.

"The reason you play footy is to be successful and with that you have to play in finals, so that's our goal. You want to win a premiership in the end and I think this club can do it in the next few years."

Trengove, 19, signed a three-year contract extension with Melbourne last season and said he had every intention of playing out his career with the Dees.

"I'll definitely be a one-club player at this point," Trengove said.

"Ever since I got drafted to Melbourne, they've been fantastic to me. The boys round the club, the coaching staff…it's been great so far."

Scully, who is battling knee soreness, failed to make the trip to Adelaide on Thursday and won’t play in the club's NAB Cup opener against the Crows and Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

Scully joins Robbie Campbell (Achilles), Jack Fitzpatrick (foot), James Frawley (pectoral muscle), Nathan Jones (back), Jordie McKenzie (groin), Michael Newton (wrist), Ricky Petterd (hamstring) and Matthew Warnock (ankle) on the sidelines.

Melbourne has named a 35-man squad, including Blease and draftees Lucas Cook and Jeremy Howe for the triple-header and Trengove said it would be exciting to see more of the club's young talent on show.

"In the NAB Cup you're looking for improvement leading into the season," he said.

"There are a few new players around…so hopefully we'll get some more development into them and build up to a big season."
