MELBOURNE is set to pull a selection shock by calling on former VFL star Jay Lockhart for an AFL debut, just 15 days after he joined the club.

AFL.com.au understands the 23-year-old former Tasmanian will become the fourth fresh face for the Demons this season when he tackles Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. 

Lockhart, who last year impressed for the Demons' VFL affiliate Casey, was signed on the final day of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) earlier this month.

After a strong showing on the training track and a standout performance in last week's VFL practice match against Box Hill, Lockhart was told of the news this week.

Lockhart previously won two premierships for North Launceston in the Tasmanian State League before crossing to the Casey Demons in the VFL.

The Demons handed AFL debuts to Marty Hore and Tom Sparrow and a club debut to another SSP signing Corey Wagner in last week's loss to Port Adelaide.
