ADELAIDE will challenge Richard Douglas' one-game suspension for the bump that left Essendon's Zach Merrett concussed on Friday night.

The Crows risk a $10,000 fine if they unsuccessfully challenge the suspension, but if Douglas' ban is overturned, the midfielder will be free to play in Thursday night's Grand Final rematch against Richmond at Adelaide Oval.

The Tribunal will sit at 5pm AEDT on Tuesday.

The Douglas-Merrett incident occurred in the first quarter of the Crows' loss to the Bombers at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Based on the match day report and speaking to umpire Rob O’Gorman, who laid the report, the available video evidence and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head.

Douglas and his representatives will travel to Melbourne for the hearing.

Meanwhile, Essendon's Brendon Goddard has accepted his $1000 sanction for making careless contract with umpire Ray Chamberlain during the third quarter of the Bombers' win against Adelaide last Friday night.

"As a club, we feel like Richard was within the rules of what the game is," Crows midfielder David Mackay told reporters on Monday.

"I wasn't privy to the conversations this morning about whether we challenge or not, but the club obviously feels it can make a strong case."

Douglas could be the second player this year to be suspended for a bump.

Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray failed in his attempt to have a one-game ban overturned for a bump on West Coast's Jeremy McGovern in the JLT Community Series.

But Mackay didn't believe those incidents would lead to the bump being rubbed out of the game altogether.

"Not really, you just have to be aware of what's within the rules and what isn't," Mackay said.

"As players, we're made aware of what's acceptable and what's not acceptable, so we're really clear about what's required.

"The onus and the responsibility is on us to execute things within the rules, so it's pretty simple."
