WEST Coast and the Western Bulldogs have held talks over the Eagles' first-round pick as the Victorian club searches for a satisfactory conclusion to the Jake Stringer saga.
The Eagles are willing to part with pick 13 to improve their NAB AFL Draft position, with list manager Brady Rawlings keen to move up the order if the right deal can be found.
But AFL.com.au understands the Eagles are also open to strengthening their draft hand by obtaining extra selections as they transition from the oldest list in the competition.
West Coast's pick 13 could be the circuit-breaker the Dogs are looking for in the deal to send talented but wayward forward Stringer to Essendon.
After missing out on pick 11 from the Bombers, the Bulldogs have been offered picks 25 and 30 for Stringer in what the Dons suggest is their final offer.
That deal would leave the Dogs with picks nine, 25, 28 and 30 inside the first two rounds of the draft.
But they want to secure a first-round pick for Stringer, and have discussed selection 13 with the Eagles, who will need an eye-catching offer to part with their top draft choice.
West Coast, which is seeking elite midfield talent and a crumbing small forward, has only had two picks inside the top 28 in the past three years – snaring emerging star Liam Duggan (pick 11, 2014) and yet-to-debut onballer Daniel Venables (pick 13, 2016).
While the Eagles have kept their cards close to their chest this Trade Period, they are working on a deal to snare midfielder Brendon Ah Chee from Port Adelaide.
West Coast's third-round selection – pick 50 overall – is understood to be in the Power's sights, but the clubs are still haggling over the deal.
A pick slide, where they swap selections in the third and fourth rounds, could help smooth the negotiations with a trade expected to be completed before Thursday's 2pm (AEDT) deadline.
