LIAM Jones has opened talks with Carlton on a new contract after resurrecting his career in defence this season.
When the Blues acquired Jones from the Western Bulldogs in the 2014 NAB AFL Trade Period, they were looking to bolster their attack with a key forward who had kicked 68 goals in 66 games at the Whitten Oval.
Jones managed just 16 goals from 17 games in his first two seasons at Carlton and his career appeared on shaky ground as he entered the final year of his contract this season.
However, the 198cm Tasmanian has revived his career since being shifted into defence in the VFL early this season.
After earning a senior recall in round 12 against Greater Western Sydney, Jones has been outstanding in the Blues' backline alongside fellow talls Caleb Marchbank and Lachie Plowman, helping to keep the likes of Jonathon Patton, Tom Lynch and Taylor Walker quiet.
Jones' manager, Shane Casley, confirmed to AFL.com.au he was in talks with Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni about a new deal for his 26-year-old client.
"'SOS' (Silvagni) and I have caught up a couple of times and are in ongoing dialogue. Liam is pretty keen to stay at Carlton and hopefully we can get a deal done sooner rather than later," Casley said.
Jones has received AFLCA award votes in three of his four senior games this year, polling in his performances against Gold Coast, Adelaide (both three votes out of a possible 10) and Greater Western Sydney (two).
He has also averaged more one-percenters than any other Blue in 2017 (11.5 a game; the next best is Sam Rowe, 7.3).
In addition to his strong defensive play, Jones has been an effective rebounder for the Blues since his return, averaging 6.5 marks and 3.8 rebound 50s a game.
