Roughead returns
Doctors diagnosed the four-time premiership Hawk with a recurrence of melanoma in June last year and he took the season off football to focus on winning his cancer fight. Roughead revealed in December he had the all-clear, and was back in Hawthorn's line-up – as skipper, no less – in round one.
Mundy's match-winner
Richmond looked home when Brandon Ellis snapped a goal in the dying seconds at the MCG, but Fremantle's midfielders got to work at the next centre bounce and got the ball to David Mundy, who proved he had ice in his veins, winning the game with a goal after the siren.
Howe heads for the clouds
It's not rare for the Magpie high-flier to soar skyward, but this mark over Melbourne's Tom McDonald had the crowd on their feet. Howe, who formerly played with Melbourne, kept soaring as he balanced himself on McDonald's shoulders, to take a mark that will sit high among the long list of great marks he has taken.
Rohan on the siren
A seventh goal in a row either side of three-quarter time put the visitors up by 17 points late in the game, before goals to Oliver Florent and Nic Newman gave the Swans life. Gary Rohan then marked in the goal square as the siren sounded and converted to break Bomber hearts.
Mitch McGovern's miracle
Adelaide had recovered from a 50-point deficit to move within striking distance of the Magpies but it appeared their gallant attempt to recover had failed. With eight seconds remaining Jake Kelly kicked in hope to a huge pack of players 30m out from the Crows goal. McGovern, ran, jumped, flew sideways and still managed to get a grip on the ball and hold a mark among desperately raised fists, declaring himself as a special player. He then went back and slotted the goal to force a draw.
Ryder and Gray break Saint hearts
Ryder brilliantly tapped the ball from a boundary throw-in over his shoulder into the path of Gray, who sprinted just inside 50 and kicked the match-winning goal over St Kilda with seven seconds on the clock.
