Night two wrap: Suns' shock trade, Dons take son of triple-flag Lion
Gold Coast and Geelong have orchestrated a blockbuster trade in the early stages of the second round of the NAB AFL Draft at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night
GOLD Coast and Geelong have orchestrated a blockbuster trade in the early stages of the second round of the NAB AFL Draft at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.
The Suns parted ways with their 2020 mid-first round pick, given to them as part of an AFL assistance package, along with pick 64 in exchange for selection 27, which they used on Western Australian wingman Jeremy Sharp.
It looms as a massive win for the Cats with the pick slated to be 11th overall in next year's draft before father-son and NGA selections are taken into account.
Sharp, an outside midfielder with a penetrating kick, is just one of three players to earn back-to-back All-Australian selections in this year's draft.
Draft slider Deven Robertson can finally breathe easy after getting picked by Brisbane with the first selection of the second round.
Selected with the 22nd pick overall, the Western Australia captain was stunningly overlooked on Wednesday night when he was the only player invited to the first round who wasn't taken.
Robertson won the Larke Medal as the best player at this year's under-18 national championships and earned comparisons to courageous Geelong skipper Joel Selwood.
The only knock on Robertson is his kicking efficiency, however his inside clearance work and ability to find the ball are in the top echelon of this year's draftees.
Geelong pulled one of the major surprises, selecting bolter Francis Evans at pick 41.
The 18-year-old forward played just two games with the Calder Cannons, but did the bulk of his damage with Brunswick-NOBS in the VAFA, booting 21 goals in five games.
The Lions elected not to match two bids for academy products Noah Cumberland and William Martyn, who were snapped up by Richmond with back-to-back picks at No.43 and 44 overall.
The Magpies pulled the trigger on a somewhat unusual trade with the Tigers, moving up one pick from 46 to 45, and swapping 2020 second-round selections, so they could snare draft slider Trent Bianco.
GWS rewarded mature-age forward Jake Riccardi, 20, for his outstanding form with Werribee, trading up to take him with pick 51.
Riccardi was voted the most promising player in the VFL.
The Giants snapped up VFL star Jake Riccardi.
The end of the draft delivered a couple of left-field picks.
The Suns took 22-year-old forward Jy Farrar, who played two SANFL games with Adelaide, but spent most of his season with Scotch OC in Division Two of the Adelaide Footy League.
Essendon grabbed Lachlan Johnson, the son of Brisbane triple-premiership player Chris, with pick 63.
The Bombers swooped on Lachlan Johnson.
Lachlan - who tore his ACL in July - was eligible to join the Lions in Friday's NAB AFL Rookie Draft and was also in Essendon's Next Generation Academy.
And with the final and 65th pick, the Giants took a punt on 24-year-old Millicent carpenter Tom Hutchesson, who played for Adelaide in the SANFL.
