FORMER Collingwood rookie Lachlan Smith shapes as a possible smokey as clubs finalise their plans ahead of this week's NAB AFL Draft.
The 24-year-old lasted only one season with the Magpies after being taken as a rookie at the end of 2011.
But after starring for Kyabram this year in the Goulburn Valley League in country Victoria this year, Smith has caught the attention of AFL scouts and is understood to have nominated for the national draft.
Geelong has been linked as a possible suitor for Smith late in the draft or as a rookie pick on Monday, while others have also shown interest.
''To be honest, I'm not real confident and I got told to nominate just in case, but I'm not expecting too much,'' Smith told the Shepparton News.
''I'm thinking if I do get picked up, it will be in the rookie draft and not the main one, but I'm not hanging my hat on being drafted.
''It's a good opportunity because I don't want to look back in 10 years' time and have regrets.''
Smith was taken with the Pies' No.17 pick at the 2011 NAB AFL Rookie Draft from the Murray Bushrangers as a marking forward who could also play in defence.
There are expected to be around 75 picks used at the national draft on Friday night in Sydney, but clubs are expected to invest in fewer selections at the rookie draft on the following Monday.
