CARLTON has confirmed its interest in drafting former Melbourne player Chris Johnson in the pre-season draft, according to a report in the Herald Sun.

Johnson, who walked out on Melbourne last week, was sought by the Blues during trade week, but an agreement could not be reached.

Carlton offered the 22-year-old a two-year deal after contacting the Demons three weeks ago seeking information on Johnson’s physical condition.

Carlton chief executive Greg Swann said the Blues hoped to secure Johnson even though it only had pick six in the pre-season draft.

“We are pretty sure he wants to come to us if he can get to us,” Swann said.

“We have offered him a two-year deal. (Carlton assistant coach Mark) ‘Bomber’ Riley knows a bit about him, but if it happens, it happens. We are mindful that we have pick six in the pre-season, so he might not get through.”

Johnson was originally recruited from East Fremantle and while West Coast and Fremantle both have picks before Carlton in the pre-season draft, it is understood Johnson has no desire to return to Perth.
