VICTORIAN coach Mark Thompson has confirmed Gary Ablett has a tear in his calf and will be unavailable for Saturday night's Hall of Fame Tribute Match.

Thompson, who also coaches Ablett at Geelong, said the Cats' champion was "shattered" about not being able to emulate his father's exploits in the Big V.

Ablett's injury will keep him out of the game for one to two weeks, according to Thompson.

In brighter news for Victoria, the coach said that while skipper Jonathan Brown was still a wait and see prospect, the Lions' power forward was "jumping around" at training on Thursday.

Brad Johnson's availability will be determined tomorrow after the Bulldogs star did not train with the main group, but Thompson remains hopeful that the veteran will take the field.

"He wants to play and that's why he's here," he said.

St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo also did not take part in full training, with Thompson saying the classy onballer was a "more unlikely" starter than Johnson.

The Victorian team trained for almost an hour on Thursday morning.
