LANCE Franklin has become the first player since Tony Lockett to kick 100 goals in a home-and-away season, but Brendan Fevola finished cruelly short of his own ton on a memorable night at Telstra Dome.

Franklin took just 25 minutes to kick the two goals he needed for the milestone. He put through his 100th goal from a mark 25m out on a slight angle.

He finished with four goals for the night to win the John Coleman Medal with 102 goals.

Fevola began the game a longshot to bring up his own ton, on 92 goals for the year. He was goalless at half time, but piled on seven goals in the second half.

He was denied pleas for two free kicks within goalscoring range as the clock wound down in the final quarter. But Hawthorn controlled possession in the final minutes to leave Fevola stranded.

Play was held up for around 10 minutes as fans ran onto the ground after Franklin’s goal.

Fellow Western Australian Paul Bower lined up on Franklin and kept him quiet for 22 minutes, with the help of teammate Bret Thornton.

Overzealous at times in a fast-paced opening, Franklin's only early contribution was to give away two free kicks for pushes.

He finally outpointed Bower to take a great mark and brought up his 99th goal with his first kick of the game.

Around 1000 of the near-capacity crowd ran onto the ground after the milestone goal, despite warnings of heavy fines for pitch invaders. Security guards rushed Franklin from the ground until the arena was cleared.

Fans unfurled a banner reading "Buddylenko – You Beauty" across the wing, while hundreds massed around the players in the centre circle.

Franklin becomes the first indigenous player to kick 100 goals in a home-and-away season.

He is the first player since Lockett in 1998 to kick a ton in a home-and-away season and the first Hawk to reach the century since Jason Dunstall, in 1996.

St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig kicked 13 of his 103 goals in 2004 in finals.

Franklin’s is the game’s 56th recorded ton.

Fevola was in the thick of the action in the opening quarter, but managed just two behinds from three early chances.

Playing on experienced defender Trent Croad, he hit the post with three minutes played, failed to score with a gettable shot from inside 50, then just missed with a brilliant effort from the boundary line.
