FREMANTLE has moved a step closer towards building its new training facility after the WA state government granted planning approval for the $106 million project in Perth's southern suburbs.

The Dockers are planning to move their home from Fremantle Oval to a new facility to be housed in a purpose-built community development at Cockburn Central West. The project is due to be completed by 2016-2017.

The state and federal governments have provided $22.4 million of funding towards the project.

The planning approval means the City of Cockburn can complete the tendering process to appoint a builder for the project in 2015.

The Dockers will have a state-of-the-art training base and administration facility built on the site.

The project will feature two full-size ovals, an Olympic size swimming pool, a 25m indoor pool, a community indoor sports centre, as well as cafés and other community facilities.

Fremantle president Steve Harris told the club's website the project would not only secure the club's long-term future but also provide major benefits for the community.

"It is a world-class project that will provide a tremendous benefit to what is a rapidly growing region and place the club at the forefront of integrated elite sporting and community facilities in Australia," Harris said.

"The site also provides greater prospects for future expansion, community engagement and supporter interaction."
