This weekend, footy fans around the country will gather as one to celebrate the AFL Dreamtime Round.

Not only does the Dreamtime Round mark an opportunity to pay tribute to the contributions indigenous players have made to AFL football, it’s also a time to reflect on the lessons that can be learned from the traditional aboriginal approach to caring for the environment.

Australia’s original ‘greenies’, aboriginal people have long been in touch with the environment and the need to protect and nurture their surrounds.

Prior to European settlement Aboriginal people based their hunting and gathering, religious and ceremonial activities around natural forces including climate, landforms and location of flora and fauna.

The practices Aboriginal people developed under these constraints, such as the use of fire, worked to the benefit of the environment and much can be learned from their unique respect for the land today.

Origin and the AFL are providing footy fans with a simple yet effective way to make a positive impact on the environment with their Green For Footy program.

Any footy fan in Victoria or South Australia can have a truly ‘green’ home and help their club reduce its impact on the environment by simply switching to accredited GreenPower and Green gas with Origin Green for Footy.

Footy fans who sign up receive a free Green For Footy pack including six energy efficient light globes, a low-flow shower head, a mini green Sherrin® football, drink bottle and a green backpack valued at over $110.

What’s more, Origin will also contribute $27.50 (inc. GST) to the Club each footy fan supports to help them become carbon neutral.

The Green For Footy program is part of a wider initiative by Origin and the AFL to neutralise an estimated 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions generated by AFL House, the NAB Cup and the Toyota Premiership Season and Finals Series matches.

So help the Blues AND the environment this Premiership Season by switching to Origin Green for Footy. Together, we can make a difference.
