Federal Attorney General, Hon. George Brandis QC will be joined by AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan to present the Bachar Houli Medal today, Friday September 26 at Richmond Football Club’s ME Bank Centre.

The Bachar Houli Medal, to be awarded to a young Muslim footballer, was introduced earlier this year to recognise the outstanding contribution that Bachar Houli has made to the lives of Muslim Australians as an AFL player and as an Australia Post AFL Multicultural Ambassador.

The Medal is presented to the best and fairest player within the Bachar Houli Academy who displays leadership on and off the field, as judged by participants in the innovative program.

All media are invited to attend the presentation ceremony. Richmond defender Bachar Houli will be in attendance. Details are as follows:

Bachar Houli Academy:

The Bachar Houli Academy is a high performance football talent camp for emerging junior players aged 14-17 years, who are from an Islamic background.

The academy is funded by the Federal Government through the Building Community Resilience grants program and supported by the Australia Post AFL Multicultural program.

The five-day camp is held in Melbourne during Toyota AFL Grand Final week and culminates in the Toyota AFL Grand Final parade.

The camp involves mentoring, education and leadership sessions encouraging participants to engage in their local communities and promote cultural and social inclusion. It also aims to fast-track the participant’s football development, and provides genuine pathways for them to pursue playing football at an elite level.

Bachar Houli Medal

The medal is essentially a player’s award - voted by the players.

The winner of the Bachar Houli Medal will be mentored by Bachar Houli for 12 months and will receive a $1500 scholarship to support football development and a 12 month Good Life Health Club Membership.
