Essendon defender David Myers will miss at least four weeks after needing surgery for a wrist fracture sustained in yesterday’s five-point loss to Sydney.

It is a major blow for Myers as he looked to cement a position in Essendon’s backline, particularly with the long-term absence of key defender Tayte Pears to a foot injury.

Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton told essendonfc.com.au that the 21-year-old would require surgery to insert a pin in his scaphoid.

“David will require an operation and he will unfortunately be out for the next four weeks as a result of it,” Hamilton said.

“It’s obviously very disappointing for David because he has had a really good start to the year following a solid pre-season.”

Hamilton also admitted David Hille and Angus Monfries, both late withdrawals agains the Swans, could both miss this week's match against St Kilda on Sunday.

“He (Hille) was injured at training on Thursday. It’s not a major injury, we believe, but he has a little bit of a hip problem and is probably still unlikely for this week,” Hamilton said.

“Angus has got an abductor concern and was pretty sore last week so we couldn’t look at playing him against the Swans. He’s a chance for this week but at this stage it is probably still 50/50,” Hamilton said.

Meanwhile, Andrew Welsh will return from an abdominal injury through the VFL this weekend if he gets through a full week's training.
