LONG-SERVING administrators Bob Hammond and Graeme John will retire from the AFL Commission in November.

Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder, who is a member of the Fremantle Dockers' board, has been announced as the replacement for Hammond.

“Richard is one of the leading lights of business, not just in WA but across the country," AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick said.

“We are also well down the track to naming a second commissioner and that announcement will be made in the off-season."

Goyder, 51, said he was "pleased to be in a position to provide a West Australian input and perspective".

Hammond, who played 234 games in the SANFL with North Adelaide and Norwood and had a stint as the coach of the Sydney Swans, joined the commission in 2001 after a 10-year stint as Adelaide Crows chairman.

John, who played 77 games for South Melbourne and was the chief executive of Australia Post until he retired last year, joined the commission in 2000.

“Both Bob and Graeme have served the game in every capacity,” Fitzpatrick said.

“Both men have been wonderful advocates for the national game and been involved in a momentous period of change with the expansion into the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney.

“Throughout all that time they have acted with great honesty and integrity and never lost sight of the need to nurture and protect the heartland, while always representing the needs of the grassroots football community.

“I also want to pay special tribute to Bob’s wife Jill and John’s wife Diane for their support and friendship to all on the commission.”
