COLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire says a deal to trade Sharrod Wellingham to West Coast is "nowhere near" done.
Out-of-contract Wellingham nominated West Coast as his destination of choice and requested a trade to his home state on Thursday.
Wellingham is not eligible for free agency, so the Eagles and the Magpies will have to come to an agreement during Gillette AFL Trade period, which begins next Monday.
McGuire said the Magpies were prepared to play hard ball to ensure the best possible compensation for losing Wellingham.
"He's saying that he might want to go there and now the West Coast Eagles will need to come up with something fairly substantial to get the deal done," McGuire said on Triple M radio on Friday morning.
McGuire said the clubs would have to be on the same page if they wanted to achieve a fair and adequate deal.
"Hopefully things work out, but it'll be everyone coming to their senses and offering decent compensation."
Wellingham confirmed on West Coast's website on Thursday night that he was leaving the Magpies.
Collingwood selected Wellingham at No.10 in the 2006 NAB AFL Rookie draft.
He made his debut in round six, 2008, and has since played 92 games. He was a member of the 2010 premiership team.
