THE BACK page of the local Perth paper was devoted to former Carlton premiership coach David Parkin saying it was time for West Coast to give up the premiership dream and rebuild, but John Worsfold is having none of it.

Worsfold was an assistant at Optus Oval under Parkin in 2000 but rejects the contention that his club needs to forget the flag and rebuild.

"I haven't seen David's comments, so it would all depend on what he's talking about," Worsfold said. "But I always think that good teams are not rebuilding, but building for the future, whatever situation your team's in.

"In our premiership year, we got games into [Matt] Rosa, and Jaymie Graham and players like that, so I think you're always building for the future.

"I think we've done it all the way through – we did it years ago with [Beau] Waters and [Sam] Butler, and last year with [Shannon] Hurn and a little bit with [Will] Schofield and [Jamie] McNamara, and this year so far with the three young players [Chris Masten, Scott Selwood, Brad Ebert] that have had the opportunity to play.

"And I've got no doubt other players, like [Matt] Spangher and some of those types of players will get opportunities throughout the year."

With heavy criticism being aimed at the club's midfield and forward line, Worsfold admitted that there were areas that needed urgent attention, but said the side wasn't far off playing consistently good footy.

"Overall, there's a couple of glaring things that aren't working well for us at the moment that most people are aware of, and we're going to address those.

"But we're not far away – we were within a kick of catching up to Freo on the weekend, and we think they're a pretty good side.

"We need to improve, because there's no use being within a kick of teams halfway through last quarters and still losing. But we know where that improvement can come from and we're confident we can deliver that."
