The newspaper reported that while Voss had not had any formal talks with the Gold Coast team, he was “the white-hot favourite” for the coaching position.
It quoted a source close to Voss who said any appointment would be for “five years minimum,” but could also include two development years in the AFL Queensland State League.
Voss reportedly distanced himself from coaching talk, but said he was interested and excited about the development of Australian football on the Gold Coast.
The Herald Sun said AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou had put Voss’ name firmly in the frame for the coaching position.
Asked if the AFL would select the coach, Demetriou said last week: "Not my decision to worry about. It's not our area of expertise."
Michael Voss? "I think he's interested."
Voss was the preferred choice of one of the heads of the Gold Coast bid team, former Brisbane Lions chairman Graeme Downie, the Herald Sun said.
He told the newspaper: "I would have thought he (Voss) ticked all the boxes in regards to a future coach. The only one that you can't tick is the experience box. "But I think Michael's got all the qualities and capabilities to make a coach … and he would be a great fit for the Gold Coast."
Downie conceded the length of the coaching contract would involve detailed discussions.
Vossy hasn't been formally approached by the bid team, the bid team obviously is not in a position to contract anybody because we don't have a licence, but whether it's Vossy or someone else, we'd have to come to some arrangement that covers the next two years and at least the first year, maybe year two . . . it's a tough one that," Downie said.
