COLLINGWOOD chief executive Gary Pert believes the club conducted its full due diligence into the Heath Shaw drink-driving episode, which didn't initially uncover the fact that teammate Alan Didak was a passenger in the car.

Pert said based on the information supplied at the time, the club handled the incident correctly.

"Did we do enough due diligence? We did, based on the information that we initially got and we've got to keep in mind that we deal with feedback from the public at different stages and from radio stations and we talk to players about instances," Pert said from the Lexus Centre on Tuesday in a packed media conference lasting 45 minutes.

"There was nothing in the communication from Heath when he flagged to us on the Monday morning that an incident that happened. In a lot of ways, who else was in the car and we were told that it was mate, didn't have a major bearing on it.

"It certainly wasn't something that raised us to go and do any further checking. We'd dealt with the incident, based on the information that we had, and as the day unfolded it was very superficial information that was initially coming through.”

But Pert conceded once further leads were established involving the incident that the season-long suspensions to Heath Shaw and Didak had to be introduced.

"As soon as we started to look further, we established that there was enough in it to call the players and put to the players over the phone the information that we had and at that stage they decided to ring up and say: 'We need to meet and we'd like to give you all of the details'.

"And then we dealt with it from there."
