DESPITE playing career-best football, Western Bulldogs ruckman Peter Street is patiently awaiting his chance to return to the senior side as it enjoys one of its most successful campaigns in years.
Street, 28, hasn’t played an AFL match since round 20 last year and though he's enjoying his time at Whitten Oval, he admitted it had been pretty frustrating watching his teammates surge to the top of the ladder after 14 matches.
Earlier this season coach Rodney Eade praised Street’s form, saying the lanky ruckman was ticking all the boxes in his bid to win senior selection when playing VFL football for Williamstown.
"As Rocket (Eade) said, this year has probably been my best year footy-wise, career-wise and in [terms of] consistency," Street said at Footscray Mall on Tuesday morning, where he was continuing work experience as a police officer in the hope of one day becoming a member of the force.
"It’s just a bummer that Will (Minson) and Huddo (Ben Hudson) are playing probably their best footy for this year as well, so it’s been pretty hard to break in and we’re on top of the ladder at the moment.
"I’m just happy that the boys are on top of the ladder and playing good footy at the moment."
Street acknowledged the need to be patient and said he had the full support of his coach and teammates.
"Rocket told me I’m doing all I can do and it’s up to them to pick me so I’ve just got to continue on," he said.
"All the boys have been great. They all know that I’ve been playing well.
"They’re just saying ‘Just keep going, be patient, your chance will come’.
"You never know what could happen, it’s a long season. I’m just waiting for my time."
But watching his teammates win all but one match, after finishing 13th last season, hasn’t been easy.
"That’s always hard, the team are doing well and I’m not being a part of it at the moment," he said.
"But Williamstown are on top of the ladder at the moment too so I’m just trying to do my best down there and hopefully that will turn into some chances [at senior level] later in the season."
Street said there was a great vibe around the kennel at present, with both the senior side and Williamstown on top of the table.
"It’s obviously pretty rare," he said.
"I’ve been here for five years … 2006 was a good year but this year is far beyond that."
Street's best has him hopeful
Bulldogs ruckman Peter Street knows he can only keep playing his best football, as frustrating as the waiting game can be
