AT THE end of round 13 in 1993, Geelong's star full-forward Gary Ablett sat atop the goal-kicking list with a remarkable 72 goals. The Cats were in ninth place on the AFL ladder.

Fast-forward to the end of round 13 in 2008, and Geelong's major goal scorer is Steve Johnson, with just 29 majors. And the Cats are perched comfortably atop the pile.

What a difference 15 years makes.

Geelong assistant coach Ken Hinkley is now responsible for the forward line, but in 1993 was a player in a Cats side that had an over-reliance on one player to kick the team's goals.

He admits that Geelong’s philosophy when he was playing was pretty simple: "get it and kick it to Gazza".

"This man was a superstar of the competition and probably the most individually-talented player to play the game," Hinkley says.

Now Geelong shares the burden, and is all the better for it.

"What we’ve been able to do over the journey is create a forward line now that’s very talented but also very team-orientated and doesn’t care about who kicks the goals and who doesn’t kick the goals," Hinkley said.

"It’s more about as long as we kick a score that’s capable of winning a game."
