The Suncoast Lions moved a game clear inside the AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup top four with a hard earned 35-point victory over Broadbeach at the Gabba today.

Broadbeach were dogged all day and it took four-goal bursts at the start and finish of the game to put the Cats away, 19.11 (125)-13.12 (90).

The good news for the Lions was the form of defender Jason Roe, who played his first game of the year after ongoing quad problems.

Roe was rusty in the opening term but quickly found his groove and took a string of saving marks in the second half at full-back.

Ash McGrath took his omission from senior ranks on the eve of his 100th senior game squarely on the chin, working hard against close attention from one of Broadbeach’s best players over the season Nathan Lyons.

McGrath had to work for every kick, but did more and more damage as the game wore on.

He finished with four goals, including one late in the third term to give his side 21 points’ breathing space at the last change, and another midway through the final term that put the game out of reach.

McGrath also made some nice clearances in the second half after Broadbeach matched the Lions around the bounces.

Troy Selwood was prolific in the first and last quarters, where Suncoast kicked four of the first five goals and finished with four of the last five goals of the match.

Albert Proud was busy and played with the same passion for the ball that has been a hallmark of every game he has played for the Suncoast this season.

The Lions also received stellar service from Bradd Dalziell, who constantly ran to the right spots and provided the link between attack and defence.

Scott Clouston rucked bravely and did some decent work around the ground, Phil Smith was consistent throughout, and Sunshine Coast-based top up players Nathan Strong and Alik Magin were prominent.

Suncoast also welcomed back Matt Tyler from injury and he was running into form by game’s end, although the team received a blow when Irishman Pearce Hanley left the field in the opening term clutching his leg.

The Lions received enormous drive from their defensive flanks at stages, with Daniel Dzufer standing out early and Matt Austin having a big third term, the Lions’ switches of play catching the Cats napping on occasions.

The Suncoast now have three wins from five games and are a game clear of fifth placed Morningside, with a much healthier percentage.

They also put a two-game break between themselves, Broadbeach, Labrador and Redland.

They are level on points with third placed Zillmere and trail second placed Southport by one game.

Mt Gravatt go into the coming fortnight’s split round with a 5-0 record, the Lions looking to cement their place in the four with a win at Redland next Sunday.
