Monday deadline for Cat coach
Michael Auciello
GEELONG will have a new senior coach by Monday night, as the race to replace Mark Thompson reaches its final stages.
Gold Coast assistant coach Ken Hinkley, Geelong's Brenton Sanderson and Fremantle assistant Chris Scott are believed to be the final three in the running to take the helm at Skilled Stadium next year.
The Geelong Advertiser reports Cats president Frank Costa, who will today confront Essendon counterpart David Evans over the poaching of Brendan McCartney, and chief executive Brian Cook will fly out for Ireland on Monday, and plan to have an appointment settled before then.
Mark 'Bomber' Thompson in Essendon talks for months
Mike Sheahan
ESSENDON and Mark Thompson have been engaged in discussions on his football future since July, according to usually reliable sources.
The sources say key Essendon figures, headed by club president David Evans, have been talking to the then Geelong coach regularly since Round 17, when Geelong was second on the ladder and tracking towards a fourth Grand Final in a row.
They say Thompson also had discussions with new coach James Hird more than once before resigning from Geelong and with Tim Watson, a Channel 7 commentator, former Essendon champion and an influential figure behind the scenes in club affairs.

GWS to reveal name, colours
Jason Phelan
TEAM GWS has settled on a new name and colours and will unveil both to the world on Tuesday, November 16.
The AFL's newest team has operated under the Team GWS moniker as it prepares for entry into the League in 2012, but has undertaken extensive research into coming up with a more fan-friendly name for the club to be based in greater western Sydney.
The red, white and blue colour scheme of the club's initial logo has also been of some concern to Bulldogs' supporters, whose club has worn the same colours for decades, but the AFL has made assurances the 18th team will sport a fresh, new look.

Sorry, Lions: Bulldog regrets parting shots
Martin Boulton
WESTERN Bulldogs recruit Justin Sherman has backed away from comments about the culture of the Brisbane Lions after signing on at Whitten Oval and has apologised to his old club.
On Wednesday, Sherman said his final year with the Lions was ''a bit up and down with our culture, with a few things that happened'' and he didn't expect that to be the case at the Bulldogs.
He also said he'd received ''mixed messages'' in a year when the Lions slumped to 13th.
Interstate Grand Final a possibility
Caroline Wilson
THE fall-out from the 2010 grand final rematch has ignited an angry stand-off between the AFL and the MCG, with league chief executive Andrew Demetriou floating the prospect of scheduling future replays involving interstate clubs outside Victoria.
Demetriou, still seething at the stadium's failure to fill its members' reserve for the rematch - a failure he claims cost the AFL $1 million in revenue and caused restricted MCC members to be turned away from empty seats - said the AFL commission would next month discuss a range of strategies involving future grand final draws and would not rule out moving the next replay from the MCG.
''We have a contract to play the grand final at the MCG, but there is nothing in the contract which talks about grand final replays,'' he said. ''It could be something we look at if non-Victorian clubs were concerned. Certainly next year would be an issue, with the grand final already taking place in October.''
