MELBOURNE forward Aaron Davey showed Sunday’s midfield role might be a glimpse into the future after the Demons dynamo played a starring role in getting his side across the line against Fremantle.

Melbourne produced its greatest-ever fightback to overturn a 50-point deficit at half-time before eventually winning by a goal, with Davey among the best afield.

The pacy left-footer spent the day roaming between the midfield and the forward line, finishing with 19 classy possessions.

It might not have looked it mid-way through the match with his side trailing badly, but coach Dean Bailey’s decision to start the creative goalkicker in the centre square for the first bounce might have proved a masterstroke.

The move meant Davey was able to get his hands on the ball early in the contest. Later, with his confidence up, the 24-year-old was able to really do some damage, booting three second-half goals to help sink a fading Fremantle side.

While happy to play “wherever is needed” to help the team, he said he enjoyed his stint further afield and can see a more regular role in the middle.

“I don’t mind it,” Davey said of playing on the ball.

“I’ve just got to keep chipping away at my fitness in the pre-season.

“Every year my engine’s getting a little bit bigger and bigger, so I’d look forward to it.”

Davey said the Demons’ plan at half-time was simple, and once they got a sniff they were confident they could go on with the job.

“We knew that if we just stuck to our goals that things would eventually fall into place,” he said.

“Come three-quarter time, we had that sense we were going to run over the top of them because we finished off pretty strongly in the last few games.

“Our last quarters in the last few games have been excellent, so we just had that feeling at three-quarter time and we knew that we just had to stick to our game and keep playing for each other.”

Davey helped spark Melbourne’s third-quarter surge with two goals in the term, one a certain contender for goal of the round.

The mercurial forward danced his way around a couple of Freo opponents before slotting the goal from about 50m.

“That just unfolded,” Davey said of his magical goal.

“Once I got past that first bloke, I just had my mind on [the] goals.

“Then I sort of got myself into trouble again and tried to do the old dummy handpass and it came off, luckily.”

His third goal – late in the final term – sealed the Demons’ win, sending the Melbourne faithful into a frenzy. Davey said he couldn’t have been happier to repay the loyal fans who turned up to voice their support for the club.

“Something that really stood out for me was the crowd today, the way our supporters really got behind us and really showed their true colours,” he said.

“Running out to see that many loyal supporters waving their flags around and the roar, it nearly brought tears to my eyes just running out through the banner.

“That’s just super, and I hope they can keep doing that week in, week out.”
