PORT Adelaide utility Chad Cornes believes Essendon's Andrew Lovett will regret his decision to break the unwritten players' code of silence at the AFL tribunal this week.
Lovett was involved in a quarter-time altercation with Power ruckman Dean Brogan on Sunday at AAMI Stadium, but the incident wasn’t captured on television.
Instead, the tribunal relied on the testimony of Lovett and umpire Dean Margetts to suspend Brogan for one match for engaging in rough conduct.
Cornes said Lovett's decision to out Brogan on Tuesday night was "really disappointing".
"I think he (Lovett) will look back in a couple of years and be really disappointed with himself and the way he handled that," Cornes said on Thursday.
"Unfortunately, we don’t play Essendon again this year, but we look forward to playing them next year."
Lovett copped some close attention from both Brogan and Power defender Michael Pettigrew, who gave the Bomber a verbal spray after collecting him high in a tackle.
Cornes denied his side went out with the aim of challenging Lovett physically.
"Lovett was just so important to them over the pre-season and he’s just got such good skills and is so explosive when he’s got the ball," Cornes said.
"We knew if we could stop him and curb his influence early on, it would go a long way towards us winning.
"We didn’t single him out or go out and try and hit him or anything like that. Broges plays that way every week. If you watch the start of our games, he always targets the gun opposition midfielder and it’s worked well for us over the past few years.
"That’s what gets him up and I wouldn’t expect him to change the way he plays at all."
Playing tough, hard footy was the Power's focus over the summer and Cornes said his side would continue that way, despite Brogan’s ban.
"I think you’ve seen over the pre-season that we’ve really got that aggression and toughness back into our footy," Cornes said.
"It’s been one of the things that most of us have worked on, especially in the weights room. We’ve got confidence in our bodies and we’ll definitely use that on the weekend."
