HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin will face the club's leadership group early next week after being caught speeding in Brighton East on Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks confirmed on Friday that Franklin had been booked by police for travelling more than 30km/h over the limit in a suburban street.

A Victoria Police spokesman told AFL.com.au a 25-year-old had lost his driver's licence for six months for speeding in Brighton East yesterday.

"Moorabbin highway patrol members conducting laser duties in Hodder St, Brighton East intercepted a 25-year-old man just before 2pm yesterday (Thursday) travelling at an alleged speed of 90 km/h in a 50 km/h zone," the  spokesman said.

"The Brighton East driver was issued with a penalty notice of $599 ,which includes a six month licence suspension and a loss of six demerit points."

The club said Franklin had been served a 28-day notice, after which time his driving suspension would begin.

The Coleman Medal leader has had an initial meeting with club officials, where he is said to have expressed remorse for his actions.

Franklin sent a public apology via Twitter on Friday, admitting he was "a bloody idiot" for speeding.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said any club-imposed penalty would not be decided until after Saturday's clash with Collingwood.

"We'll deal with it at the appropriate time, but the appropriate time isn't 24 hours before a big game against Collingwood," Clarkson said on Friday.

"There's no matter of urgency in terms of the way we'll treat it.

"There's been an indiscretion.

"'Buddy' has acknowledged that, the club has, we're disappointed it's occurred, and he is as well.

"But we'll deal with it on Monday or Tuesday rather than right now."

A club spokesperson said Hawthorn's leadership group would have a say in any punishment.

Franklin is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered against Greater Western Sydney in round 15.

He will not take the field against the Magpies, and is also in doubt for next Friday night's clash with Essendon.
