While the Lions would have certainly been hoping to head back to Brisbane with their first win of the year, today's narrow practice match defeat against Carlton is not likely to give Senior Coach Michael Voss too many sleepless nights.

In fact, Voss remained upbeat after the match and and believes the team will take plenty of positives from the pre-season hitout.

“I thought Matt Maguire was pretty good and Andrew Raines gave us some great run out of the backline which was pleasing,” Voss said after the loss.

“There were a few other guys who stepped up a bit as well.”

“There were a couple of times when young Jesse O'Brien just needed to keep his eyes on the ball - and he did. He also fought his way through traffic well. You look for all those small signs in players,” he said.

“Todd Banfield is another who is really starting emerge as a small forward - and we haven't had a plethora of those over the last couple of years. That should give him enormous confidence.”

“Those are the types of things you like to see in pre-season games. It's a good opportunity for guys to push their way through and put their hand up.”

“It was just pleasing to see so many young kids in our midfield and to have them matched up against the likes of Chris Judd and Brock McLean will be really good experience for them.

“It's good to see guys like Rockliff, Harwood and Proud mix it with them in there.”

Voss hinted that up to eight players could return next week when the Lions take on reigning premiers Geelong at Southport.

“Most players will be available for next week,”Voss said. “Daniel Rich, Jed Adcock, Josh Drummond, Daniel Merrett, Simon Black, Ash McGrath and some others should all be available.”
