Hawthorn Football Club in conjunction with its VFL affiliate, Box Hill Hawks Football Club, has appointed Brendon Bolton as senior coach of the Box Hill Hawks for 2009.

Meanwhile, the Hawks have appointed David Flood as a development coach.

Bolton, who took over as senior coach of the now disbanded Tassie Devils in the VFL in 2006, is a well known figure in Tasmanian football, having coached North Hobart to a Southern Football League Premiership in 2003.In 2008 Bolton was senior coach at Clarence, before taking on the Box Hill job.

Heading to the Hawks and taking the reins at Box Hill provides Bolton a terrific challenge, according to the Tasmanian, who is delighted to be joining the Hawks coaching staff.

“I was looking to coach at a higher level and Box Hill is a club that is looking to the future and has great support by its AFL affiliate Hawthorn,” said Bolton.

“I am looking forward to implementing my own strategies at Box Hill and learning from the coaching panel at Hawthorn as I continue to develop. I am a life-long learner and am happy to be working with Hawthorn senior coach Alastair Clarkson and continuing to challenge the way things should be done.”

“The Box Hill Hawks have a strong local following and their performances towards the end of last season where they won around six of their last 10 games showed that they can again be a successful club,” he said.

Bolton is optimistic about the challenge ahead and believes the strong culture that he has witnessed to date at Box Hill will be important as the Club continues to strive forward.

“I think that the Box Hill Hawks have a great list of young players and a strong culture and are a great chance of success over the next few years.”

Hawthorn Football Club has also appointed David Flood as a development coach. Flood was a development coach at Essendon Football Club from 1999-2003, before taking on the role as senior coach of the Coburg Tigers in the VFL, 2004-2005. Most recently Flood was coach of the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup for two years.

Flood brings with him a wealth of experience in developing young AFL footballers in both the VFL and TAC Cup and will play an important role in the continued development of the Hawks first to third year players.
