ESSENDON chairman David Evans says embattled Bombers coach Matthew Knights will have his position reviewed at the end of the season, despite being contracted through to the end of 2012.

Knights had his contract extended last year, but the poor performances in recent weeks have seen the pressure on the Bombers increase, despite the massive rebuilding job that Knights was faced with when he took over from club legend Kevin Sheedy at the end of the 2007 season.

The Bombers have had an erratic season, beating the Western Bulldogs, Carlton and Hawthorn, but losing to West Coast and Port Adelaide, and five loses have been by more than five goals, with three by over 10.

"The focus for the Essendon Footy Club is to make sure right now that we continue to go very hard for these 28 points that are remaining (in 2010)," Evans told SEN Radio on Tuesday.

"At the end of the year we review, like we do every year, but right now Matthew Knights is very focused on ensuring that we continue to develop our list and get the list to continue to improve.

"That's my message to supporters."

With pressure growing to install club legend James Hird as coach - despite Hird saying he had no desire to coach in the immediate future, and supporting the path the club was taking - Evans refused to guarantee the coach would see out his contract.

Evans said he talked to Hird on a regular basis.

"James is a good friend of mine - we speak often," Evans said.

"He's got a very good emerging business career that is starting to flower. Whether coaching is a part of the future, I don't know."
