Ben Crocker is the late inclusion, with the Crows changing nearly half their team after a four-day break following last Saturday's disappointing defeat to the Kangaroos.
The rebuilding club has now lost Smith to injury, while Andrew McPherson, Kyle Hartigan, Shane McAdam and Tyson Stengle were all managed. Meanwhile, Bryce Gibbs, Kieran Strachan, Riley Knight and Rory Atkins were dropped as part of nine changes.
Two debutants in Lachie Scholl and Harry Schoenberg came into the team for their maiden AFL appearance ahead of the clash, alongside Crocker, Darcy Fogarty, David Mackay, Fischer McAsey, Ned McHenry, Taylor Walker and stand-in skipper Tom Doedee.
Melbourne made four changes of its own for the contest at the Adelaide Oval, with Aaron vandenBerg, Adam Tomlinson, Alex Neal-Bullen and Harley Bennell replacing the injured Kysaiah Pickett and the omitted Mitch Hannan, Oscar McDonald and Tom McDonald.
