Collingwood has won the Victorian membership race, smashing the previous record set by the club in 2004.

Collingwood finished with 42,498 members when the official club membership period closed on June 30, ahead of rivals Essendon (41,947), Hawthorn (41,436) and Carlton (39,360).

The Magpies broke the club and league record for Victorian membership on ANZAC Day when the 41,257th member was signed just prior to the 73-point demolition of Essendon, and used that momentum to remain the biggest and most supported club in Victoria.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire praised all Collingwood members.

“Breaking the membership record and finishing with the largest membership in Victoria is testament to the phenomenal passion, loyalty and commitment of our members and supporters,” McGuire said.

“On behalf of everyone at the club we would like to thank all those who have either signed up for the first time or renewed their membership, and ensured Collingwood continues to prosper.”

Collingwood's membership has grown by 3,911 on the same time last year, or by just over 10 per cent, with the club having significantly closed the gap on non-Victorian clubs Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle, who each experienced drops in membership figures from 2007.
