"There were games where I thought I’d poll really well and I didn’t and there were games where I didn’t think I’d poll and I did.

"(Judd) is a fantastic player and to get tagged like he does every week, it’s probably a good thing he polled as well as he did. Obviously the umpires are seeing he’s being tagged every week and looked on the basis of that.

"I feel a bit sorry for Swanny. I know how hard it is to come in as favourite. There was a lot of talk he already had the medal around his neck. He has had an amazing season and should keep his head up. He’s got a big chance of a premiership this week.

"He’s had a couple of fantastic seasons in a row. I feel for him a bit. It would be good if there could be four or five winners but that is the way it goes.

"It was a bit different tonight. As disappointing as it was to miss a grand final, it was good to have a few beers tonight and enjoy the night with the boys and girls. I’m sure we’ll go for a few more.

"No, there’s no big announcements for my future."

Brett Ratten
"I said to one of the people on the table I thought he’d have about 27 votes ... I think he has been the dominant player in our team and that was justified by the votes.

"We spoke about what a great year he had. I think the big things are what he can do going forward and we touched on some of the things he could improve on. Being the player he is, he is such a great leader and there wasn’t a lot to point out. He’s still got great things going for him.

"I know Diesel (Carlton's last Brownlow winner, Greg Williams) was very clean but I wouldn’t like Diesel trying to chase Chris away from the stoppage. Diesel would be out the other side hoping (Stephen) Silvagni and those blokes would get the footy. They are different players but in their own right - unbelievable stoppage players to go out and get first possession. I watched (Anthony) Koutoufides first-hand and Williams and Chris. They are probably the three best stoppage players I’ve seen in their prime.

"It is great he has won a Brownlow when you consider he missed three games at the start of the season."

Justin Madden
"I think it is a great result. It is a great indicator for Carlton that they’ve got a bright future. It is a good news story for the club and we need as many of those as we can get.

"In the few games I’ve seen this year he has been fantastic and a standout, in contrast to some of the team. He consistently excels so he’s been wonderful.

"I was hoping big Aaron Sandilands would do well too. He’s a great ornament to the game, obviously he didn’t get the breaks late in the season. It’s always good to see the big blokes get the votes as well."
