The Magpies trailed by two points when Wellingham gathered the ball deep in the forward pocket. His long kick was paid as a goal but the ball appeared to skim the inside of the post.
It was paid a goal despite heated protests from Cats Corey Enright and Josh Hunt among others.
The kick brought back memories of Tom Hawkins' goal against St Kilda in the 2009 Grand Final, that was later shown to hit the post.
