Port Adelaide has continued its remarkable start to the 2001 season with a 43-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Football Park.

The Power has now won five of its first six matches and shapes as a genuine premiership contender, after last year spending the whole season in the bottom rungs of the ladder.

The home side shot out of the blocks and withstood a spirited fightback from the Bulldogs, eventually prevailing 20.9.129 to 18.8.86.

Ruckman Matthew Primus and on-baller Josh Francou led a Port Adelaide midfield which swarmed over a dogged but undermanned Western Bulldogs lineup.

Francou was superb in getting the ball out of the packs and clearing it out of the centre, picking up 33 disposals and feeding the Power's fleet of skilful hard-running midfielders.

Nick Stevens, Peter Burgoyne, Roger James, Jarrad Schofield, Adam Kingsley, Michael Wilson and Fabian Francis all made good contributions as Power coach Mark Williams consistently rotated his running players on and off the bench.

The Power kicked five of the first six goals in the opening 14 minutes of the match, the only Bulldogs goal in this period a 60-metre shot off a step from Rohan Smith under pressure.

Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace flooded his defence in an effort to stem the Power onslaught and it worked late in the first term and early in the second as the Bulldogs were able to kick five unanswered goals to move to a five-point lead three minutes into the second quarter.

Brad Johnson was instrumental in the Bulldogs revival, kicking two first-half goals and gathering a stack of possessions, with Nathan Eagleton also providing some midfield spark.

But Power goalsneak Che Cockatoo-Collins was able to take two strong marks and kick consecutive goals to break open the Bulldogs' defence and help Port to a 10-point lead at half-time.

And with the Bulldogs missing midfielders Jose Romero, Tony Liberatore, Paul Dimmatina and ruckman Luke Darcy, Port's large number of quality midfielders were able to wear the Bulldogs down in the second half.

The Power kicked six goals to two in the third term, then outscored the visitors 5.4 to 4.1 in the final quarter to notch their fourth huge win in a row.

Cockatoo-Collins, Burgoyne, James and Chad Cornes finished with three goals each for the Power.

Port's leading goal scorer Stuart Dew was kept almost completely out of the game by Ben Harrison, who was among his side's best along with Johnson, Scott West, Ron Smith and Chris Grant.
