PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams says he’s banking on miracles happening to resurrect his side’s season after a 57-point loss to Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

Despite Fremantle being reduced to just 19 fit men, Port Adelaide could only manage one second half goal as they recorded a club record seventh straight loss.

Over the next month, the Power must face finals contenders Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn along with a local derby clash with Adelaide.

Williams said he was frustrated with his side’s run of losses but he was not prepared to write off the season.

“We’ll believe that miracles can happen and try as best we can to win every game and if we do we’ll make the finals,” he said.

“We can’t do anything about the draw - we just worry about the next week and the rest will take care of itself. We have to rehab the players make sure they’re in a good mindset and get out there and try again.”

Williams said the record run of losses didn’t sit well with a proud club like Port Adelaide,  but he couldn’t question his players’ commitment.

“You play enough games you put yourself in line to get the negative records and the positive ones,” he said.

“We’re in a situation where everyone’s aware of it and the only thing that will fix it is a win.

“There’s no doubt that they’re extremely disappointed about it, but if you look at the tackles and look at contested possessions you can see that they’re trying. But right at the moment we’re not good enough to get that win.

“It’s a disappointing time for our club but we don’t just look at this minute or this week or this month, it’s about developing our players. There were some good positive things for our younger players to hang their hat on.”

Williams said that after fighting its way back into the game after a poor start, Port Adelaide could have toppled Fremantle.

“We were very positive and always optimistic about what we might be able to do, but they’re playing at home and they’re playing to push themselves as high as they can up the ladder,” he said.

“They’re a confident side and obviously our confidence is not there because we haven’t won for a long time.

“So we were mindful and hopeful that we could win at half time, but we still have to get out there and win it, and to Fremantle’s credit they took it away.”
