WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says a player-driven mantra to ignore outside opinion helped the side to its first win in three weeks on Sunday.

Eade said the players' determination to put a few bleak weeks behind them prompted the attacking performance that generated the 65-point win over the Brisbane Lions.

"A few of the leaders spoke this week about it doesn't matter what people think. It's about what we think internally," he said.

"I thought that was a good, strong message from the players themselves.

"We just needed to have some action and they showed that. I've got confidence and belief in the group and they showed it today."

Eade agreed it was an important win for the players but insisted it had to be the start of something more permanent if it was going to be significant.

"I don't know about the club but the team certainly [needed to win]. We need some more as well," he said.

"We've got ourselves in a situation where we just need to keep winning.

"It's a small step forward. The season's long - we've still got 10 games to go. You take one step forward and one step back and it doesn't gain you too much ... We need to produce something like that every week, and if we're going to compete with the best sides we need to do it consistently."

The Dogs' coach was happy with his side abandoning the cautious approach it had applied over the past fortnight for all but a patch in the second quarter.

He also praised the form turnaround of Will Minson and Daniel Giansiracusa, as well as Barry Hall's six-goal game and Dale Morris' job on Brendan Fevola.

However, he confirmed the Dogs would likely be without Tom Williams against West Coast after the defender hurt his left hamstring late in the second quarter.

"We thought it might have been a spasm but we won't know until a scan. There might be a slight nick there," he said.

"Flying as well wouldn't help it so he might miss the one."

Ryan Hargrave will be available, as will skipper Brad Johnson - who had 19 touches for Williamstown on Saturday - for the trip to Perth.

But the emergence of Easton Wood and the success of Robert Murphy's shift into defence could see Hargrave held back for another week despite Williams' absence.

Callan Ward will also be considered after having 32 touches in the VFL.
