Inaugural coach Gold Coast FC
Guy ‘Bluey’ McKenna earned a reputation as one of the league’s great backmen during his 12 years with the West Coast Eagles.
Playing 267 games from 1988-2000, the former Claremont junior showed a commitment to the ball and pinpoint disposal across half-back that shaped him into the side’s most reliable player.
A cornerstone of the West Coast golden era, McKenna won two premierships with the club in 1992 and ’94, and played in the losing grand final side of ’91.
A high achiever from the outset, Bluey was runner-up in the Eagles' best and fairest during his debut season, winning the award the following year and again a decade later, in 1999. He was the first player to reach 200 games with the club.
An All-Australian half-back and WA State of Origin representative on four occasions, he was a superbly balanced footballer who also showed strong leadership. He was rewarded with the Eagles' captaincy in the final two years of his playing career.
While he joins the Hall of Fame in 2009, Guy McKenna’s football history is not yet complete. As the inaugural coach of the Gold Coast Football Club, no doubt he’ll add to his illustrious contribution to the game of Australian football.
