Melbourne midfielder Brock McLean is the round three nominee for the 2005 NAB AFL Rising Star award.McLean has enjoyed a fine start to 2005, with 11 touches against Geelong at the MCG last Friday, which followed his 21 possessions and two goals against the Western Bulldogs the week before.Speaking at the Junction Oval on Tuesday afternoon, McLean said he was a little surprised to be told of his nomination."It wasn't one of my best games, Friday night, but we were in a meeting yesterday and Neale Daniher read it out and I didn't know if it was true or not," he said.McLean conceded, however, that his form across the pre-season and the three premiership rounds so far has been generally good, and he's aiming to maintain his place in the Demons' line-up for the entire home-and-away season."It hasn’t been too bad. My pre-season form wasn't too bad. I got a chance to play in the midfield and I just want to take that with both hands, stand-up and play some good footy. I'm still trying to achieve that."I set my goals pretty high and I usually find that if I set my goals high I get the best out of myself and strive to achieve that."McLean said his team-mates, including the 2004 AFL Rising Star, Jared Rivers, had wished him well on his nomination, but warned him not to get a big head.McLean was drafted by the Demons with the fifth selection overall at the 2003 national draft and played nine games last season – making him eligible by just one game for the 2005 NAB AFL Rising Star.He was recruited from the Calder Cannons, after originally playing for Aberfeldie.
