Geelong full-forward Kent Kingsley has backed calls for an additional umpire to adjudicate on line-ball nine-point goals during the Wizard Home Loans Cup.

Speaking on Sport 927, Kingsley said that the AFL should follow the lead of American football, which has successfully introduced video evidence to assist referees with difficult decisions.

“I don’t think it would be that hard to implement,” he said. “I know in American football they use a third umpire for everything.”

Long goals to Jess Sinclair of the Kangaroos and Jason Cloke of Collingwood were paid as six-point goals on the weekend, but when replayed on TV were clearly kicked from outside the 50-metre arc.

Kingsley said there was a similar occurrence the week before following a long goal from Peter Riccardi.

“It could be the difference between winning and losing a game,” he said.

Meanwhile Kingsley, who booted 57 goals last year and nearly won the Coleman Medal, has refused to nominate any personal goals for the season.

“I haven’t set any personal goals as in kicking ‘x’ number of goals. I just want to play a complete season of football and it’s certainly a goal of the club to play finals football,” he said.

“We’ve been close the last couple of years and the guys have a taste for it.”
