Fremantle young gun Nat Fyfe kept himself fit during his off-season break back home in Lake Grace after being given the keys to his old football club in the South-East WA town.

Fyfe, 19, said he was keen to return to Fremantle in good shape when 2011 pre-season training kicked off on 15 November so he took up the opportunity to train at his old stomping ground.

“I did a bit of weights at the gym and went for a few runs around town,” Fyfe said.

Fyfe, who had an impressive debut season in 2010 playing mainly as a forward, is keen to be given a crack at playing midfield in 2011.

“All my younger years I’ve been a midfielder and I enjoyed having a stint in the midfield last season up on a wing,” Fyfe said.

“Hopefully I get a chance to play there again and be versatile enough to go forward and kick a few goals.”

Fyfe believes he has the right physical attributes to play midfield and he made a good impression in the 3km time trial on the first day of pre-season training, when he finished third behind Rhys Palmer and new recruit Tendai Mzungu.

“I’ve always been pretty good at middle-distance running,” he said.

“Three kilometer time trials aren’t a real good indication of what makes a player a good midfielder, but I definitely think I’ve got a reasonable running capacity that will hold me in good stead playing through the middle.”

The youngster’s pre-season has been restricted by surgery on a finger injury on his left hand which has prevented him from participating in ball work.

He has been doing all the running work and expects to be back to full fitness in a couple of weeks.

Fyfe’s main focus for the remainder of the pre-season is to get into the best physical shape and hit the ground running in 2011.

“If I’m physically in the right spot going into the season, then that’s all I can do and I’ll take it as it comes,” he said.
