National Camp 1

Geelong Conference Centre

A successful first camp was held immediately after the AFL Grand Final and the Academy would like to thank the team at the Geelong Conference Centre for the quality of the accommodation and meals provided during our stay.
If any sporting organisations are looking for accommodation in Geelong, either for a camp or conferencing, this great park location is ideally situated in Eastern Park providing easy access to a range of facilities.

For details or bookings contact:

The AIS/AFL Academy would also like to acknowledge the assistance given at this camp by the following:

* The Deakin University, Health and Well-Being unit with its quality facilities and equipment. Particular thanks to Jill Miller for her time and coordination.
* Brian Cordy, Rod Rush and Kath Tuddenham at the Sacred Heart College, for their time and the use of the home economics wing, the computer facilities and the gymnasium.
* The Geelong Football Club and specifically Stephen Wells (Recruiting Manager), Ron Watt (Skills Coach) and Luke Williams (IT Manager) for their time in providing such an insight into the requirements of being an AFL footballer.

The measure of a program is in the quality of the support it is given by other organisations. Our program is far stronger for the time and expertise provided by the personnel of these three organisations.

National Camp 2

AIS Canberra

With this Newsletter you will find the arrangements for the Canberra camp including the introduction of our “Additional Athletes” program.

Our flights are again with Qantas and electronic tickets are to be collected at the check-in counter. Patrick Ryder and Tim Hutchinson will be mailed “paper tickets” for their flights from and back to Geraldton and Mt Gambier respectively.

All athletes are to check-in at least 45 minutes before departure. Make sure you have identification for the collection of your ticket and, if you are on multiple flights that your baggage and boarding passes are directed all the way to Canberra. If you have any difficulty please quote the Booking Reference alongside your name on our Flights to and from Canberra table. For bookings that do not yet have a Booking Reference, I will forward it as it becomes available from Qantas.

All AIS/AFL Academy athletes are to fly to and from Canberra in your blue Academy polo shirt, brown cargo shorts and white AIS socks. Remember that the only acceptable cap is your Academy one. The additional athletes joining us are asked to be presentable in a club or state tracksuit or club casual wear.

All athletes arrive in Canberra between 4.00pm – 4.30pm and will be met by an AIS bus for transport out to the Institute.

I will meet James Bennett and Edward Wilson at the AIS Residence reception between 5.00pm – 5.30pm

Training Programs

Over the next two weeks most clubs will begin their pre-season programs. Our Academy program has been designed to lay a foundation for the club programs.

I ask that you now work the two programs in together and remind you that if you complete any Academy requirements with your club – you do not have to do it again for me.

Ensure that your weekly reports are in on time and give me as much detail as you can on how things are traveling for you all.

Nutrition Tip

As you move into your training requirements remember that the snack eaten before training is an opportunity to fine tune carbohydrate (energy) and fluid levels to ensure you feel comfortable and confident.

Good Snack Ideas 1-2 hours before training:

* fruit smoothie or milk shake
* cereal bars
* fruit
* yoghurt
* Liquid meal supplement (eg: Sustagen or Power Bar drink)

If you have any questions regarding eating before training during this summer period please contact Michelle Cort at the AIS on (02) 6214 1729 or on her e-mail address Michelle.Cort@ausport.gov.au

National AFL Draft Camp

The AFL conducted its 11th National Draft Camp over the three days of 28th September - 1st October at the AIS in Canberra.

75 players were invited to participate. To receive an invitation each athlete had to be nominated by at least five AFL clubs who had included the athlete on the list of 50 names for Draft Camp consideration. On top of the Draft Camp selections, 120 players who received between one and four nominations were invited to attend state based screening sessions.

22 AIS/AFL Academy athletes were invited to Canberra with a majority of them being high up in the fitness results and in the assessments of their skill level. Both Angus Monfries (SA) and Richard Tambling (NT) said that even though they were nervous leading up to the camp, they felt quite prepared as a result of what they had learnt and experienced during their 12-month scholarship period with the Academy.
