THE AFLPA has said it is too early to say that changes are necessary to the free agency model introduced for the first time this season.

The Players' Association's player relations manager Ian Prendergast said it's important to wait until the exchange process is over before considering whether any elements need reviewing.

On Tuesday prominent player agent Marty Pask told Gillette AFL Trade Radio that compensation picks should not be allocated to clubs as part of the free agency process because it reduced opportunities for player movement.

Pask said that clubs who had lost players to free agency were not prepared to secure other free agents because it might jeopardise the value of compensation picks heading their way.

Under the free agency model, compensation is allocated to clubs that experience a net loss of players transferring to other clubs through free agency. Clubs considered compensation an important element of any free agency model and pushed for its introduction during the consultation process.

"The best thing to do is to sit back and see how this all plays out," Prendergast said.

"We've agreed to this model with the AFL. We think it is well balanced in terms of players towards the back end of their career being able to choose their employer while also allowing clubs to retain their star players."

So far seven players have moved clubs through free agency while former Bomber Angus Monfries - a restricted free agent - joined Port Adelaide via a traditional trade early this week.

The allocation of compensation picks has been the subject of discussion during the first two weeks of the trade period with some clubs suggesting the delay in awarding compensation picks to clubs until the end of the free agency period is proving a roadblock to trade negotiations because some clubs aren't certain about what they have to offer.

St Kilda hope to to receive pick No.13 as compensation for losing Brendon Goddard to Essendon but will not know for certain until the AFL informs clubs of their compensation when the free agency period closes on October 19.

Some believe compensation picks are unnecessary because of the extra salary cap space that comes about when a free agent leaves.

"Unfortunately a lot of the focus does centre on compensation and how it does operate but in a sense it is missing the point of what free agency should deliver and that is freedom of movement of players who are eligible," Prendergast said.

League football operations manager Adrian Anderson agreed that it was too early to reach any conclusions as to what elements of the process might be considered for review and was comfortable with how it was unfolding so far.

"There are some encouraging signs of players obviously getting opportunities at new clubs where that club sees more opportunity for that player," Anderson said.

Many players remain in limbo during the three-week trade period as clubs put off deciding their futures until after the trade period is completed.
