NORTH Melbourne would not pick Ben Cousins if he nominates for next year's NAB AFL Draft, coach Dean Laidley says.

Cousins could resume his football career in a state league if he registers before Monday's deadline, but Laidley ruled out the possibility that Arden St could become a future home for the Brownlow Medallist.

"No. Look, I've got great respect for Ben, what he's achieved on the field, and probably also what he's been going through, but he's probably not the right fit for us at the moment," Laidley said on Wednesday.

"A whole host of reasons – age, the amount of footy he's missed. There's a whole host of reasons why."

But Laidley welcomed Cousins' return to competitive football.

"I think every person deserves another opportunity in life and in their given occupation, and I'm absolutely right behind him all the way."

On Tuesday night Cousins' management said he was "more likely than unlikely" to play in the VFL this year.

The AFL deregistered the former Eagles captain in November last year, and its regulations prevent him playing for either the Geelong or Collingwood VFL teams, meaning he can choose between 12 clubs from the VFL, or nine in the WAFL, if he chooses to stay in Perth.
