FOLLOWING a verbal stoush with Brownlow Medallist Brad Hardie on Monday night, West Coast coach John Worsfold has conceded his side deserves heavy scrutiny.
But the premiership coach and two-time premiership captain defended his ability to build a premiership side.
Hardie criticised team selection on 6PR's Sports Talk program, and doubted Worsfold's ability to lead the Eagles to another premiership drawing a passionate response from Worsfold on Tuesday morning.
"I've shown that I can do that (coach a premiership team)," Worsfold said.
"I just found it interesting that Brad Hardie would question my ability to build a team to win a premiership, when he doesn't know what's part of that team because he hasn't been in one.
"Brad's had no part in our success and no part in our current situation either."
However, Worsfold said he held no grudge with Hardie, a prominent radio personality in WA, and understood his role in the media.
"I think he does a very good job as a commentator and creating storms and all those things he's paid to do," the coach said.
"I often touch base with him, especially after we've had good radio sessions and he's often smiling afterwards. I've got no doubt he was rapt last night.
"I think he has to question us, because that's what our supporters want to hear, they want to hear the answers."
West Coast has been savaged in the press and on talkback radio for responding passively to Saturday night's 135-point loss to Geelong and Worsfold said he could understand fan frustration.
"I would have been very disappointed watching our game on Saturday night," he said. "As members or supporters I would have been disappointed in the team's effort, in some individuals’ effort, in the coaching staff's effort, and that's fully understandable."
But Worsfold ruled out wholesale changes - saying his side simply didn't have the depth to take such action - but revealed out of form midfield duo Chad Fletcher and Tyson Stenglein were set to come under the microscope at this afternoon's selection meeting.
In Worsfold's opinion the WAFL is not an option just yet for Stenglein but he was unable to guarantee Fletcher's place for Friday night's clash with Hawthorn.
"He (Fletcher) certainly didn't use it well enough for what you'd expect of a player of his quality on Saturday night," Worsfold said.
"We'll have to take that into account.
"Are there players in better form? Are there younger players that can come in and offer us something? All those things are taken into account."
The other hot topic at selection is sure to be Lance Franklin's opponent and Worsfold suggested the possibility of an extra tall defender with 20-year-old Eric Mackenzie a chance of adding to his one senior game with the club.
"I expect [captain Darren Glass] will be first choice, if not 'Glassy' we may look at Beau Wilkes. There are kids like Eric McKenzie that we think have got the size and running ability to play on him.
"Whether they can do the job or not that's the biggest test for them. But you've got to back them in and we'd be prepared to do that if we thought he was ready to do it."
