More than a dozen players who competed at WAFL level at the weekend threw their hands in the air and screamed a collective ‘pick me’ to the West Coast match committee.
In all, 17 played and Bradd Dalziell travelled to Melbourne as the emergency for Sunday’s clash with the Dees at Etihad Stadium, and the players on the periphery continue to push their case.
Again, it was the usual suspects who were most prominent, with the likes of Claremont pair Tom Swift and Lewis Stevenson continuing their consistent form, while East Fremantle’s Brad Sheppard, Chris Masten, Jacob Brennan and Koby Stevens remain key factors for the Sharks. Andrew Strijk racked up good numbers for West Perth, Callum Wilson is working into form and Blayne Wilson, Scott Lycett and Jordan Jones have been instrumental in Peel’s improved performances.
If opportunities do open up, the match committee has as much trouble separating players with claims on the vacancy as any other selection conundrum of the week.
When East Fremantle upset West Perth in Geraldton on Saturday, Sheppard was again in eye-catching touch, both forward and back before being slowed down to some extent by a kick to the knee.
Brennan continues to evolve as a rebounding defender, while Masten and Stevens accumulate possessions consistently and wield an influence when they have the ball. Stevens had 28 possessions, the majority in a contested situation, and Masten had a similar amount of disposals, supported by six tackles.
Wingman Tim Houlihan found himself in a more defensive mode, but still took eight marks and was important for the Sharks.
Strijk worked hard for 22 possessions and 13 marks for the Falcons, but could not hit the scoreboard.
Callum Wilson was involved in a match where the conditions changed dramatically after quarter time, when he had kicked two goals, as sleeting rain hit Fremantle Oval on Saturday evening. He did not add to his goal-kicking tally, but continued to work hard in the testing conditions.
For Peel, Blayne Wilson played much of the game on Paul Hasleby where he learned some valuable lessons and stood tall before opposing Callum Wilson in the last quarter at full-back. He is another young defender who is making an impression.
Scott Lycett kicked two goals, had 15 hit outs and laid nine tackles in a terrific effort by the young big man while Jordan Jones continues to build his versatility, again shining through the midfield with 26 possessions and an amazing 10 tackles.
Swift was simply outstanding for Claremont in yesterday’s victory against Swan Districts, racking up 33 disposals and pumping the ball inside the Tigers’ attacking 50 seven times. Stevenson had 23 possessions off half-back and took 10 marks as a strong rebound option.
Lewis Broome struggled to impact the game, while Gerrick Weedon enjoyed some good moments through the day, with nine tackles and 14 disposals.
In the reserves developing key forwards Jeremy McGovern, in his return from a long lay-off, and Anton Hamp were under notice with solid performances.
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls started reasonably well for East Perth against Subiaco, before copping a heavy knock to the hip which impeded his ability to play at his optimum in the second half.
