RICHMOND has added ruckman Ivan Maric and defender Dylan Grimes to its leadership group with former captain Chris Newman stepping aside completely to make way for younger talent.
Newman, 30, relinquished the captaincy ahead of the Tigers' round 23 clash with Port Adelaide after four seasons in the role.
It was awarded to talented midfielder Trent Cotchin last Friday.
Richmond's general manager of football Craig Cameron said Newman had made the decision himself to step out of the group and would still act as a leader to younger players.
"Chris will naturally provide outstanding leadership skills, regardless of whether he is in the official leadership group," Cameron said.
"He recognises Richmond has an impressive group of young leaders, who will guide the club into the future.
"We have been working hard to develop a culture of leadership across the entire playing list, rather than putting the onus on particular individuals."
The leadership group was finalised while the Tigers were on their pre-season training camp in Cairns this week, with players and coaches voting on the new structure.
Maric and Grimes have joined Cotchin, vice-captain Brett Deledio, Jack Riewoldt and Daniel Jackson in the group.
"Both players fully deserve their inclusion in the leadership group, for the respect they have within the club and the way they conduct themselves, both on and off the field," Cameron said.
"Dylan is an outstanding young leader and a fine example to the developing players on our list, and Ivan has made an enormous impact at the club in only 12 months.”
Maric arrived at Punt Road via the 2011 trade period after seven years at Adelaide.
Grimes is currently recovering from surgery to mend a split in his left hamstring tendon, with the Tigers hopeful he'll be ready to start next season on time.
